Dr. Merriman is a general internist. His principal efforts at the University of Florida College of Medicine and UF Health Shands Hospital are within the fields of Internal Medicine and Hospital Medicine, with a focus on faculty development and medical education in both the undergraduate and graduate medical education areas.
Originally from Alabama, Dr. Merriman completed his medical education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Later, he completed his internal medicine residency and served as Chief Resident and Clinical Instructor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Merriman then completed additional advanced training in medical education, general internal medicine, and public health at the TH Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. Here, he had experience teaching medical students and Internal Medicine residents in both didactic and clinical environments.
Dr. Merriman joined the Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of Florida in 2022 and aims for continued growth as a clinician-educator in the areas of direct patient care, hospital medicine, institutional service, and in the training of students, fellows and physicians. He is proud to serve as the Director of Faculty of Development for the Division of Hospital Medicine and as the Assistant Clerkship Director of the UF COM Internal Medicine Clerkship.
When not on the wards, Dr. Merriman enjoys Italian food, South Carolina Gamecock football, and bike rides around Gainesville.

Dr. Merriman has additional training in advanced research practices, including study design and biostatistics. His current research interests are within the world of medical education, including direct apprenticeship of medical students within general medicine wards services and clinical simulation as a formative feedback tool for student skill development.
